Monday morning, Carson texted me at seven-thirty.

I’m heading over early so we can get smoothies. 8:30 sound good?

I peeked out my living room curtain at eight twenty-nine and saw Carson’s BMW pull up into the driveway. “See you later, Zoey,” I called out.

We pulled up to Kale Me Crazy, and he bought us both smoothies. I was grateful to see that there was no trace of the paparazzi today. When we were back in his car, I leaned over and kissed him. “Thanks for the smoothie.” I smiled at him.

“No problem, Sweet Pea.”

It was a busy day for filming, and we didn't get the chance to see each other much on set, other than a few stolen kisses in his trailer. Carson had a lot of extra scenes that Cheyenne wasn’t in, so I ended up spending most of the day hanging out in the stand-in tent, looking up future monologues, scrolling through my Facebook feed, and checking my email and Actor’s Access with the hope that another audition might pop up.

Just after two-thirty, my phone rang with a Georgia number I didn’t recognize. I swiped the screen to answer the call. “Hello?”

“Hi, Aleyna?”

“Yes.”

“Hi! This is Ebony from Freaky Film Productions. How are you?”

My heart sped up. The callback! “I’m great.”

“We would like to invite you to callbacks tomorrow evening at five.”

Would we be wrapped by then? I had no idea, but I’d just have to chance it. “Sure thing,” I said, pushing down a wave of anxiety.

“Great. See you then.”

I blew out a puff of air and decided I needed a snack to get my mind off the stress. I wove through the trailers and stepped over huge bundles of cords that connected to the lighting and cameras where they were filming. Finally, I found the crafty tent, and I browsed the huge selection of snacks. I picked out a banana, and as I reached for a bag of pistachios, I overheard voices on the other side of the tent from me.

“Hey, Carson, how did Maddie like Phantom?” one of them asked.

“She ended up bailing last minute,” Carson said.

“Lame. Those were nice tickets, too.”

“Come on, Dave,” an older guy said. “You know he picked up some hot chick to take with him. We’re talking about the mighty Carson Peters. He doesn't go to Phantom dateless.”

“Oh, is that what they say about me behind my back around here?” Carson laughed.

I crushed the package of nuts in my fist. I was just a last-minute-fill-in date? That’s all I was to him?

Carson turned the corner and stood face-to-face with me. “Aleyna,” he said. He took in my dark expression. “You just heard that.” It wasn’t a question.

“I did,” I said in a tight voice. I’d let myself feel something for him. Why was I so stupid?

“Can I talk to you for a minute?” he glanced at the crew member running the crafty tent.

“Sure,” I said. The last thing we needed was rumors flying around set about our issues.
